This is really pissing me off. This is the second Brita pitcher that grows algae in it. Even after I clean it with vinegar (letting it sit overnight) the damn thing comes back. I've been careful in not letting any tap water getting mix with the filtered water, but maybe my sister and gf weren't so careful when they were refilling it.
Anybody knows what's going on?

Wash it at least once a week (most are dishwasher safe) and make sure your refridgerator is set to a low enough temperature. Don't leave the pitcher sitting out for any reason. Only take it out of the 'fridge to use or wash.

Thats weird. I never clean my brita pitcher and it has never grown algae. Maybe you should try thoroughly cleaning your fridge.

Fill the pitcher with bleach. Drink.

try rinsing the whole thing with boiling water a couple of times. dont let the water sit for an extended period of time.

you should not have algae growing in your brita water pitcher (at all). if all this fails, just buy a new one.

I've had a Brita pitcher for four years and it has never once had algae. I wash the white insert that holds the filter when the filter gets changed (about 3 times a year). How long after you clean it does the algae reappear?

keep it out of direct sunlight??

algae needs sunlight, put it in the fridge smarty pants

The thing is that none of my friends have this problem and they all leave the pitcher outside.

who cares, gulp it down. Algae is good for you.

Stop backwashing into it when you drink.

[Edit] That sounds retarded.
I mean that most people have yellowish pee.

do you drink it directly w/ ur mouth?! I only wash it when i change the filter, and i never had algae. Maybe to many phosphates in ur tap water?

Throw away your current filter. Soak the pitcher, the insert, everything, in a solution of bleach and water (20% bleach in water will be fine). Leave it to soak for a couple of hours, and then run everything through the dish washer. Put a new filter in. Do not mix unfiltered water with filtered water. Do not over fill the pitcher. Keep the damn thing in the fridge where it is dark.

I have a PUR and i have never had algae for the 4yrs i had it and i leave it everywhere...outside mostly since i don't like cold water.

I'm not sure... We have a Brita pitcher that we keep in the fridge, and it's never had any algae. It's rarely washed, too.

My friend's dad has a Brita pitcher that he keeps out on the counter, and it's never had algae, either. I'm not sure what to tell you.

algae grows when the fridge temp is too low.

i never see algae grow in cold months.. so it has to do with temps

put some brine shrimp in there to eat the algae

problem solved!
